Lal Chowk march: Authorities order restrictions, closure of educational institutions tomorrow

Srinagar, Oct 22(KINS): Restrictions will be imposed in Old City of Srinagar and parts of the uptown here on Tuesday in wake of a protest march to Lal Chowk called by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).
Official sources told GNS that fearing law and order situation in view of the protest march to Lal Chowk tomorrow, the district authorities have decided to impose restrictions under section 144 Cr PC in the volatile old city areas falling under the jurisdiction of police stations Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Safa Kadal, Rainawari and Khanyar.
Similarly, partial curbs will also be imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of police stations Kralkhud, Maisuma and Shaheed Gunj to prevent the protest march.
Confirming the imposing of restrictions in these parts, SSP Srinagar Imtiaz Ismail Parray told GNS that the decision has been taken to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, police said that traffic will not be allowed between Regal Chowk and Amira Kadal on the residency road in Srinagar tomorrow in view of proposed JRL march.
“In view of security restrictions in Srinagar on 23rd of October 2018, traffic will not be allowed to ply on Regal Chowk-Amira Kadal Bridge Road stretch,” said SSP Traffic city Tahir Gilani.
He requested the commuters to use the alternate routes to reach their destinations.
“Any inconvenience caused is highly regretted,” he said.
The University of Kashmir has also announced that all examinations scheduled on Tuesday have been postponed.
“The examination of the papers of BG 4th Semester/B.ED 3rd & 4th Semester/M.A. Private 3rd/4th Semester/BE 2nd Semester which was scheduled to be held on Tuesday 23-10-2018 has been rescheduled,” said a varsity spokesperson in a statement.
He said the revised date sheet is available on the university website.
The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora also said the class work shall remain suspended on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, fearing any trouble, authorities have decided to close all schools and degree colleges in Srinagar and Kulgam districts.
Meanwhile, the district administration Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Bandipora, Baramulla, and Sopore have also decided to close the degree colleges and higher secondary schools in the district.
District administration Kupwara has decided to suspend class work in all colleges and higher secondary schools tomorrow except Keran, Karnah and Machil areas.
Official sources said the decision has been taken as a “precautionary measure” to avoid law and order situation.
The JRL had called for a march to Lal Chowk on Tuesday to protest against the killing of seven civilians in Kulgam on Sunday. (GNS)
