Says police have got vital leads about attackers, no info about major strike by militants on Oct 31
Srinagar, Oct 26 : Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh on Saturday said that the attack on non-local truckers was aimed to target the economy of people of Kashmir and police have identified all those behind the killings of non-local truckers at Shopian district on October 24.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a Diwali function at BSF headquarters at Humhama here, DGP said that Diwali is a festival of lights and happiness. “I congratulate BSF and their families including the women wing of BSF for organizing this festival and putting up stalls. Civilians have also put up stalls and my good wishes are with all,” Singh said.
About the fate of investigations into the killing of two non-local truckers at Shopian on October 24, probe is on and some important clues are available about the case with the police. “This is an attack on the economy and livelihood of people. It is being done to disrupt the daily life of people. Such actions are not in the interest of the people,” the J&K police chief said according to the wire service. Two non-local truckers were killed while as third one was injured after unidentified gunmen fired volley of bullets at them in Shopian district of South Kashmir on October 24.
He said that to a large extent, people are condemning such acts. “Our investigations are in an advance stage. And we almost know who is involved in the act,” the DGP said. He said that the attempts to push infiltrators into Kashmir are going on for a long time by Pakistan and ISI at the LoC.
“They have increased these attempts recently but a befitting reply is being given by our forces. All attempts of infiltration will be foiled. Reports of infiltrations at some places have come but most such attempts have been foiled,” he said.
He said that the attacks on truckers and damage of transmission towers at Shopian by militants is to damage horticulture and tourism on which many people in Kashmir are dependent. “We have identified the people involved we don’t want to disclose who are behind this act,” Singh said. “As for attacking towers, it is also an attempt to cause damage to the infrastructure. I am hopeful that soon this case will be cracked and people involved will be brought to book.”
The DGP said that the first priority is to help people associated with the apple trade. “Some steps have already been taken and wherever people need us. It is not possible to cover all areas but majority of the areas have been identified where security has been beefed up,” he said.
Asked whether there is any input about any major attack on October 31, he said there was no information in that regard but militants and their handlers always try to harm peace. “Our effort is to ensure peace. Hopefully all will remain safe. In the last few days our operations have also gained pace and militants have suffered damages,” he said. An official at the NIT told that they informed the students through regular advertisements in various newspapers including some national and local dailies. (KNO)
