Srinagar Oct 26: Police on Monday said one militant was killed in a gunfight at Noorpora area of Awantipora while another militant surrendered before the security forces.
A police spokesperson in a statement to news agency KINS says on a specific input generated by Awantipora Police regarding presence of militants in village Noorpora area of Awantipora, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 42RR and 130Bn CRPF in the said area.
“During the search operation as the presence of militants got ascertained they were given opportunity to surrender, however they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, one unidentified militant was killed in the initial firing and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter,” the statement reads. The second militant as per the statement managed to take shelter in a nearby house in the cordoned area. “The trapped militant was again given an opportunity to surrender by means of repeated announcements and after very strenuous efforts of joint security forces the trapped militant laid his arms/ ammunition and ultimately surrendered before the Joint Forces during the live encounter. The parents of the surrendered militant were called to the encounter site to meet their son,” it reads. The statement says that the surrendered militant who has been identified as Saqib Akbar Waza son of Mohammad Akbar Waza resident of Gulshanpora Tral affiliated with HM was pursuing B.Tech in civil engineering before joining of militant ranks and security forces after hectic and strenuous effort were able to persuade the trapped militant to surrender.
“Arms and ammunition recovered from the unidentified killed militant as well as from the surrendered militant were taken into the custody for Police records.”
“The dead body of the killed militant has been sent to Handwara for his last rites after conducting medico-legal formalities including collection of his DNA. In case any family claims the killed militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification at PCR Srinagar Kashmir and participation in last rites at Handwara.”
In this connection a case FIR number 153/2020 under relevant sections of law stands registered in Police Station Awantipora and further investigation initiated.
