Police arrests 03 drug smugglers in Awantipora; Huge cache of contraband substances recovered

February 25: Police said it arrested 03 drug smugglers in Awantipora and recovered contraband substances from their possession.

In a statement issued here the police said, “Officers at a checkpoint established near Beighpora Crossing signalled a vehicle bearing registration No. JK19-1210 to stop. However, the driver accelerated the vehicle and flee from the spot. The vehicle was chased by the alert police party and was again intercepted at some distance with three persons on board. They have been identified as Mohammad Mushtaq son of Mohammad Ismaeel, Mustafa son of Abdul Lateef both resident of Kuthiala Ferozpur Sangroor Punjab and Umer Farooq Wani son of Farooq Ahmad Wani resident of Budriwan Pulwama. During search, officers were able to recover 400 Kgs of poppy straw concealed in 20 large bags from the said vehicle. They have been arrested and shifted to police station where they remain in custody. The vehicle used in the commission of crime has also been seized.

Accordingly, a case vide FIR number 27/2021 under relevant sections of law stands registered at Police Station Awantipora and further investigation has been initiated.

Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood. Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law.

Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace as reiterated in our community meetings”.
