Srinagar Oct 30 (KINS): As a part of its International Youth Outreach and Employability Programme, Move Beyond- A Career Counselling School held a live interview with a renowned Kashmiri Mathematician, Professor M.A. Sofi. The interview is a part of its recently launched online educational series- Career Chat.
Prof. M.A. Sofi shared his journey and experience in depth with the audience and talked about the struggles he had to go through to embark on his journey of becoming an expert in mathematics.
He emphasized the need of students to listen to their inner call when it comes to choosing a career for themselves.
“The students should always look inside and listen to their inner call only when deciding their career path. They should not come under any sort of external pressure,” he said.
He threw light on the career opportunities available in mathematics field for students like teaching, research, actuarial mathematics which can land a student into other interesting areas such as insurance companies, financial institutions, climatology, data science, psephology, etc.
“A student can land into several demanding and fascinating fields through mathematics. It has a great scope,” he said.
He acknowledged the role of career counselling of a student in making and shaping his or her career.
He dispelled the societal assumption that girls can’t be good at mathematics.
“Girls excel and perform equally well in mathematics as their male counterparts. There are numerous girls who have made their mark in this field,” he said.
Prof. M.A. Sofi wisely addressed the questions asked by the live audience at the end of the interview.
Prof. M.A. Sofi is currently a Visiting Professor at National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM). He has been a recipient of DAAD Fellowship and Ramanujan Prize (2009) respectively. He was a Professor Emeritus at Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, upto 2019. He has also served as Adjunct Faculty, Central University of Kashmir. Besides, he is a Life member of the Indian Mathematical Society and Ramanujan Mathematical Society respectively.
